The illegal enterprise allegedly utilized overseas "virtual currency trading platforms" to assist customers in circumventing monetary limitations. Chinese social media was reportedly the site of rumors on December 24 that stated Chinese foreign exchange authorities had discovered an underground bank that was using cryptocurrency to get around FX restrictions. In order to get the necessary foreign money, underground banks bought virtual currencies and sold them through foreign trading platforms, according to Xu Xiao, an inspector from the State Administration of Foreign Exchange's Qingdao Branch. “This process completes the conversion of yuan and foreign currencies, which constitutes the illegal act of buying and selling foreign exchange,” highlighted Xu Xiao. Seizures and Widespread Operation Authorities are said to have taken $28,000 worth of cryptocurrency, including Tether, Litecoin, and others, during on-site examinations. Nevertheless, the operation's reach went well beyond the assets that were taken into custody; almost $2.2 billion passed through over a thousand bank accounts located in 17 different provinces and municipalities. Individual foreign currency transactions are limited by China's strict regulations to $50,000 per year unless a permission is secured.
