Twitch Tackles Toxicity with New Features

Share

Live streaming on Twitch has, in the past, faced challenges with harassment and toxicity. Last month, Twitch decided to address these issues head-on.

Introducing Shield Mode, Twitch’s new tool, streamers can now share the reasons behind a user’s ban with their channel’s moderators. This transparency helps warn other channels about potentially disruptive users who might be jumping from one stream to another.

Furthermore, for those moments when chat gets out of hand, streamers have Mod View. This tool allows immediate action against rampant harassment. Streamers can activate Shield Mode swiftly, and it comes with features like Follower- or Sub-Only chat, a mechanism to silence first-time chatters, and a verification requirement. It’s especially useful for those unforeseen hate-filled raids. And the best part? When the mode is off, settings return to their normal state.

Two weeks post the launch of these features, results indicate a decline in hate raids and abuse rates by nearly 20%. While determined trolls can still create numerous accounts, the collective impact is visible.

Moreover, streamers have the power to ban users from watching their streams. While it doesn’t stop determined users from viewing, it creates hurdles in chat interactions, making Twitch more secure.
