The well-known blockchain gaming startup Sky Mavis, which powers Axie Infinity, has decided to cut 21 percent of its employees. The goal of this change, which will affect roughly 50 jobs, is to better position the business for growth and operational efficiency in 2025.
The company’s priorities were recently highlighted by CEO and co-founder Trung Nguyen, who emphasized a greater emphasis on the company’s major projects for the following year. These include growing the Ronin network and creating the Ronin Wallet/Waypoint and Mavis Marketplace. The business will also fortify its position as a publisher of web3 games and keep developing its Axie Infinity ecosystem.
Nguyen addressed concerns about the downsizing, clarifying that the decision is not financially driven. Instead, it reflects a proactive step to streamline operations and set the stage for long-term growth. “This restructuring is about aligning resources for future expansion, not due to financial constraints,” Nguyen stated. He also assured remaining employees that while expectations may rise, there will be corresponding rewards for those staying with the company.
Looking to the future, Sky Mavis is preparing for a major transformation in its blockchain platform. The company plans to make the Ronin network fully open and permissionless by Q1 2025. This shift will allow any game developer to build and scale their games on the Ronin platform, expanding its ecosystem.
Additionally, Sky Mavis has teased a new title under the Axie Infinity intellectual property (IP), though details remain under wraps. These moves signal Sky Mavis’s commitment to expanding its user base and providing more opportunities for developers to engage with the platform.
With these initiatives, Sky Mavis aims to maintain its competitive edge and capitalize on the growth of blockchain gaming.
