Razer Partners with World to Tackle AI Bots in Online Gaming

Razer, a leading name in gaming hardware and software, has teamed up with World, the creators of World ID, to address the increasing threat of AI bots in online games. This collaboration will launch a new sign-on system called “Razer ID verified by World ID,” which verifies users as real humans.

The initiative will make its debut in Tokyo Beast, a futuristic game set in a 2124 version of Tokyo. In this immersive environment, humans coexist with advanced androids, competing in prediction-based battles. With features like NFTs and competitive gameplay, maintaining a bot-free experience is essential. By using World ID’s verification, developers can introduce “human-only” gaming modes, ensuring a fairer and more engaging experience.

Addressing the AI Bot Problem

The rise of AI bots has significantly impacted multiplayer gaming, with many players expressing frustration over their presence. A survey referenced by Razer revealed that 87% of U.S. gamers prefer knowing whether they’re facing a bot or a real player. Additionally, 59% regularly encounter bots in games, while 74% believe it diminishes their enjoyment. In some cases, 18% of gamers reported quitting games entirely due to bot interference.

Wei-Pin Choo, Razer’s Chief Corporate Officer, emphasized the importance of verified communities in fostering fair competition. “Growing a verified community is key to fair play,” Choo stated. “To foster fair competition, developers must be able to build trusted, human-only game experiences that keep AI bots out.”

World ID, co-founded by Sam Altman and Alex Blania, offers a privacy-centric identity verification method. Unlike traditional systems, World ID ensures users are human without collecting sensitive data. This privacy-preserving approach could set a new standard for bot prevention while respecting user anonymity.

Tiago Sada, Chief Product Officer at Tools for Humanity, highlighted the value of this innovation. “World ID enables gamers to distinguish between authentic human interactions and AI-generated content, all while safeguarding their privacy,” Sada noted.

Additionally, developers integrating the system can benefit from improved security, better user management, and increased in-game economy transparency. Verified users will also gain access to Razer Gold, facilitating seamless transactions for thousands of digital products.

Initially, Tokyo Beast will serve as a test case for the “Razer ID verified by World ID” system. The verification tool is currently available in 23 countries, including the United States, Japan, Germany, Singapore, and South Korea. Razer anticipates further expansions across upcoming titles.

With the growing influence of AI and blockchain technologies, Razer and World’s partnership represents a step towards maintaining fair play in digital spaces. As AI bots become more sophisticated, initiatives like these could help sustain trust and enjoyment in competitive gaming environments.
