Pachinko Games Revitalize Senior Brain Health in Japan

Over the past 20 years, Japan’s pachinko industry—which was once a booming sector—has seen a severe drop. Elderly folks, on the other hand, are a fresh and unexpected audience that could be changing this trend. Pachinko may see a comeback despite Japan’s severe gambling regulations, because to its health advantages and specially designed experience for senior residents.

Health Benefits of Pachinko for Seniors

Pachinko, a game resembling pinball, involves players launching steel balls through a maze of pins in hopes of landing in pockets that award more balls. Beyond its entertainment value, pachinko is gaining attention for its potential cognitive benefits, particularly for the elderly.

Hiroto Kamei, sales director at Toyomaru Sangyo, a pachinko machine developer, highlighted how the company is focusing on this demographic. In a Bloomberg interview, he explained that adapting the games for older players is central to their strategy. Kikunori Shinohara, a professor at Suwa Tokyo University of Science, also noted the game’s impact on brain health, stating, “I’m getting old myself, but doing activities I like that have benefits are much better than doing tedious therapy.”

To enhance this experience, Toyomaru Sangyo collaborates with scientists, adding features like pedals to the machines. This allows seniors to exercise while they play, offering both physical and mental stimulation.

Although there is a resurgence of interest in pachinko, the sector has suffered from previous connections to illegal gambling. Spending at pachinko establishments reached $101.8 billion in 2022, which is half of what it was twenty years prior. Pachinko is still allowed, though, because steel balls are given out in lieu of cash. Tokens can be swapped for these balls and subsequently turned into cash.

Senior executive Kaoru Mori of Day Service Las Vegas, an elderly daycare with a casino motif, stressed the benefits of pachinko for senior citizens. He clarified that the games are safe and enjoyable, allowing seniors to take regular breaks without having to spend real money.
