NFT Holders Get First Deadrop Update Since Dr. Disrespect’s Removal

Share

Midnight Society, known for the extraction shooter Deadrop, has launched an exclusive update for its NFT holders. This is the first significant move since co-founder and popular streamer Dr. Disrespect, also known as Guy Beahm, was removed from the company following allegations of inappropriate communication with a minor.

The update, available only to Founders Access Pass NFT holders, introduces a team deathmatch mode. Players can embody either the human Claw or the metallic R.A.T. (Robotic Acquisition Teams), each with distinct abilities and play styles. Claws are slower but more durable, while R.A.T.s are faster but have lower health. The robotic R.A.T.s build on the “Synthetics” from previous Deadrop versions.

Additional features in this update include an overhauled movement system, enhanced gunplay, and a new “adrenaline” system for Claws, which grants bonuses based on in-game actions. Players with the $20 Tower Key passes, which are not NFTs, cannot access this update.

In an official blog post, Midnight Society emphasized that this is a “development build,” encouraging players to report bugs and provide feedback. This approach aligns with Deadrop’s gradual expansion based on early supporters’ guidance.

Community Resilience and Future Prospects

The update follows closely on the heels of Dr. Disrespect’s departure from the company. Midnight Society terminated its relationship with Beahm after conducting an internal investigation into the allegations. Dr. Disrespect admitted to conversations that “leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate” but claimed “nothing illegal happened.”

Despite concerns that Deadrop might falter without Dr. Disrespect’s influence, many in the game’s community remain optimistic about its future updates. The recent blog post outlines plans for players to use R.A.T.s or Claws in the main extraction shooter game mode. This development build aims to refine the interactions between R.A.T.s and Claws, establishing two distinct play styles.

R.A.T.s, powered by a battery that drains during gameplay, are encouraged to extract early. They are equipped with “loan” weapons and can only extract in-game currency “Dust,” making them a lower-risk option. In contrast, Claws spawn with their gear and can extract any loot they find, presenting a higher-risk, higher-reward scenario.

Typically, Deadrop updates are released in “Snapshots,” with the last major update in October 2023 and an enhanced Snapshot 7.5 in January. In February, Midnight Society announced plans to roll out fewer but more polished updates this year.

Midnight Society’s latest update underscores its commitment to refining Deadrop while maintaining engagement with its dedicated community.
