Meta has unveiled the new Meta Quest 3S, offering a more affordable entry into mixed reality without sacrificing too much in performance. Announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg during the Meta Connect conference, the Quest 3S brings the price down to $299 for the 128GB version, while the 256GB model costs $399. Pre-orders are now open, with shipping set to begin on October 15.
This move places the Meta Quest 3S at a much lower price point than the standard Meta Quest 3, which originally launched at $499 for the 128GB version. The 512GB version will now take over the $499 slot as Meta phases out the 128GB edition. As part of a promotional offer, both the Quest 3S and new purchases of the Quest 3 will include a free copy of the VR game Batman: Arkham Shadow for a limited time.
The Quest 3S shares many similarities with the Quest 3, including the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip, providing solid performance for virtual and mixed reality experiences. However, the lower price comes with a few trade-offs. For example, the Quest 3S lacks the depth sensor found in the Quest 3, which helps detect physical boundaries in mixed reality environments. Despite that, users can still switch between immersive and passthrough views via a dedicated button on the Quest 3S, as opposed to the double-tap feature in the Quest 3.
While the display resolution and field of view are reduced compared to the Quest 3, the Quest 3S still offers a competitive experience. The battery life has seen a slight improvement, with the Quest 3S aiming for 2.5 hours per charge, compared to 2.2 hours on the Quest 3. The Quest 3S also includes the same Touch Plus controllers as its higher-priced counterpart.
Meta’s strategy with the Quest 3S appears aimed at making mixed reality more accessible to a broader audience. Zuckerberg emphasized this during the conference, stating, “We also build technology and innovate to bring the future to everyone, and we’ve been working on bringing the Quest 3 family to a lot more people.”
