Minecraft continues to dominate the gaming landscape, setting impressive records along the way.
In an event during the weekend, Mojang Studios disclosed another milestone achievement – Minecraft has now been sold in excess of 300 million copies globally. In doing so, it leaves behind the immensely popular Grand Theft Auto V, which registered sales of 185 million by August 2023.
Reflecting on this, Helen Chiang, the leader of Minecraft Studios, remarked on how this number was a “milestone no one could have dreamed of when we were all placing our first blocks”.
Originally introduced in an unfinished form in 2009, Minecraft officially hit the shelves under Mojang Studios’ banner in November 2011. What makes Minecraft stand out is its sandbox attribute. The game empowers players, irrespective of their age, to create anything they envision using the game’s block-like components, akin to Lego.
The year 2014 saw Microsoft acquiring Minecraft for a jaw-dropping $2.5bn (£2bn). It’s now an essential part of Microsoft’s gaming arsenal, especially after Microsoft’s monumental $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the makers of Call of Duty.
One reason for Minecraft’s soaring popularity is its omnipresence beyond the game. YouTube videos featuring Minecraft have amassed views exceeding one trillion, as per Google.
However, there’s still ground to cover for Minecraft. The iconic Super Mario series and the vintage Tetris still lead, boasting sales of over 800 million and 520 million respectively.
