Microsoft’s New Patent Ensures Only You Can Read Encrypted Documents

Share

It can be dangerous to work on confidential documents in public. While conventional techniques such as privacy screens and application darkening are helpful, Microsoft has developed a more sophisticated approach. With the help of their proprietary technology, only the portion of the document that you are currently viewing is readable.

According to a Microsoft patent that Windows Report highlighted, the system maintains documents encrypted and unreadable save for the section that you are currently viewing. The patent doesn’t go into great depth about the technology, but the idea is obvious. The content of the document is safely encrypted, but its general structure is preserved.

The system uses a webcam or another eye-tracking device to follow your gaze. It generates an alpha-blending mask that creates a ‘hole’ in the encryption, revealing the original text beneath your gaze. As your eyes move, the mask follows, ensuring you always see readable text. This approach predicts eye movement, reducing latency and making the experience seamless.

Enhancing Security and User Experience

Microsoft’s algorithm considers peripheral vision, ensuring that text near your focal point is also somewhat readable, avoiding abrupt transitions between encrypted and readable text. It also accounts for the natural, jerky motion of the eyes, known as saccades.

Microsoft’s method appears more sophisticated than AMD’s Privacy View, which just dims screen areas that are not in use. It does not, however, totally remove dangers. Any visible portion of the paper could potentially be photographed by someone using a camera that is not within the eye-tracker’s field of view.

Still, this technique works better than standard laptop privacy screens, which only restrict the viewing angle. These screens don’t offer encryption, but they do darken the screen for side viewers. For people who must work on private papers in public areas, Microsoft’s approach provides true protection.

Although it is preferable to work on private documents away from the public eye, this isn’t always possible. Microsoft’s cutting-edge technology provides a strong method of protecting your data. Your data is kept safe thanks to encryption, even in potentially dangerous environments.
