Microsoft Expands Xbox Game Reach to PlayStation and Nintendo

Share

Microsoft has somewhat surprised many, or not, with its decision to release some of its Xbox-exclusive games on rival platforms, potentially including Sony PlayStation and Nintendo systems. This move, confirmed by Xbox head Phil Spencer on a recent podcastis a change in strategy for the gaming giant, aiming to extend the reach of its original franchises beyond its own console ecosystem.

Despite swirling rumors, Spencer made it clear that certain anticipated titles, such as Starfield and the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, are not part of this cross-platform initiative. Furthermore, he addressed speculation about Xbox Game Pass’s expansion to other consoles, stating that there are no plans to extend the subscription service beyond its current availability on smartphones, tablets, and other devices.

Spencer revealed that the games slated for cross-platform release are all more than a year old, though he refrained from specifying which titles are included. However, reports from The Verge, citing sources familiar with Xbox’s plans, suggest that Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded are the games in question.

This strategy is described by Spencer as an experimental effort to broaden the audience for Xbox’s original content, hinting at a future where exclusive titles may play a less dominant role in the gaming industry. He expressed a belief that the landscape of gaming will evolve over the next decade, with exclusive games becoming less common.

While Spencer has not committed to releasing more Xbox games on competing consoles beyond these four titles, this initiative does not indicate a step back from hardware development. On the contrary, leaks suggest Microsoft is actively working on a new Xbox console, expected to launch in 2028.
