Microsoft & Apple Withdraw from OpenAI Board Membership

Microsoft and Apple have opted out of joining the board of artificial intelligence firm OpenAI, citing increasing regulatory scrutiny as the primary reason. This move comes despite Microsoft’s significant $13 billion investment in OpenAI in April 2023.

Microsoft has officially withdrawn from its observer role on OpenAI’s board. According to Bloomberg, an anonymous source revealed that Microsoft communicated its decision through a letter sent to OpenAI. The letter expressed confidence in the new board’s progress and direction, stating, “Over the past eight months, we have witnessed significant progress from the newly formed board and are confident in the company’s direction. We no longer believe our limited role as an observer is necessary.”

This decision follows Microsoft’s substantial investment in OpenAI, indicating a shift in its approach towards its involvement in the AI firm’s governance. Despite stepping back from the board, Microsoft emphasized its ongoing partnership with OpenAI, highlighting continued collaboration.

No Board Observers for OpenAI

Contrary to reports that Apple would take up an observer role on OpenAI’s board, the AI firm will have no board observers following Microsoft’s departure. This decision underscores a strategic shift for OpenAI as it navigates the complexities of regulatory landscapes and corporate governance.

In a statement, OpenAI expressed gratitude towards Microsoft, saying, “We’re grateful to Microsoft for voicing confidence in the board and the direction of the company, and we look forward to continuing our successful partnership.” This sentiment reflects the continued synergy between the two companies despite the change in board dynamics.

Leading sports betting technology company Kambi set lofty targets in January of last year, hoping to double its earnings and operating profit by a substantial margin by 2027. The company’s initial goals were to generate operating profit of more than €150 million and sales of between €330 million and €500 million, which is two to three times current FY2022 levels.

A recent review conducted by the board of Kambi and the company’s new CEO, Werner Becher, found that although the company has achieved progress in areas under its control, regulatory delays in important markets call for a reevaluation of these goals. The board is still optimistic about the company’s future, but it recognizes that expectations must be modified in light of the state of the market.
