Share

The International Esports Federation (IESF) has partnered with the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and United Against Online Abuse (UAOA) campaign in an effort to address the widespread problem of online abuse in sports. By working together, the IESF demonstrates its commitment to creating a secure online space where athletes are respected above all else.

22 athletic federations and NGOs expressed grave worries about the harmful effects of internet abuse on athletes in a recent industry-wide study carried out by the United Against internet Abuse campaign. Key findings emphasized the urgent need for action by highlighting the impending risk of losing sports stars as a result of the frequency of abuse.

Survey Highlights Urgent Need for Action

Key findings from the survey, encompassing perspectives from global sporting federations including FIFA, World Athletics, and UCI, shed light on the severity of the issue. An overwhelming 75% of respondents reported instances of threats against athletes and their families, while 66% stressed the imperative for social media platforms to intensify efforts in combating online abuse.

In order to combat internet abuse in the sports world, cooperation is essential, according to Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA and Founding Partner of UAOA. Sulayem emphasized the need for behavioral and legislative changes in order to successfully prevent abuse, highlighting the campaign’s goal of creating a safer environment.

Within the esports community, Boban Totovski, the General Secretary of the International Esports Federation, highlighted the importance of sportsmanship and respect. Totovski, who emphasized the need of creating a friendly atmosphere for all participants, urged positivism and inclusion and urged a group effort to counteract toxicity.
