Anichess, a blockchain-based gaming platform combining traditional chess with magical abilities, is carving its place in Hong Kong’s Web3 gaming sector. The platform completed a $1.8 million funding round last year, led by Sfermion and Amber Group, which provided the resources to expand its reach and develop innovative gameplay. Since its launch, players have completed over 500,000 matches, amassing more than three million minutes of game time. Its community has grown to 40,000 active Discord members, who contribute to game updates, test features, and help onboard new users.
The company is also focused on strengthening the local Web3 gaming ecosystem through educational initiatives. Anichess partners with Hong Kong developers and educational institutions to host hackathons, workshops, internships, and networking events. These efforts aim to bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3 gaming, while building a talent pool skilled in blockchain technology. Anichess plans to take part in key industry events such as Consensus Hong Kong in February and the Hong Kong Web3 Festival in April. Last year, it engaged with over 1,000 participants at the GEN3 Playground event hosted by Animoca Brands, offering insights into blockchain, Web3 gaming, and digital ownership.
Globally, Anichess is expanding its presence in the Asia-Pacific region. India, the Philippines, and Vietnam are among its top five markets by player registrations. The company recognizes India’s strong chess culture and growing interest in blockchain, making it a key area for growth. It also aims to extend its reach to the Latin American market.
Anichess is preparing to launch a play-and-earn model to further engage its users. Upcoming features include tournament buy-ins, an in-game marketplace, and premium options that will establish a sustainable in-game economy.
Brian Chan, head of Anichess and vice president of operations and projects at Animoca Brands, highlighted the platform’s progress. He said, “Anichess reaching 100,000 monthly active users showcases the appeal of Web3 gaming and our innovative fusion of chess with blockchain. We’re proud to have built this game in Hong Kong and to expand it globally, advancing Web3 through gaming and chess. As we grow, we will also remain committed to nurturing our roots: Hong Kong’s vibrant Web3 gaming ecosystem.”
