Actors and motion capture experts who work in Hollywood video games are scheduled to go on strike starting on July 26. The action has been confirmed by the Screen Actors Guild—American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), which cited allegations of industry misuse and unresolved issues related to AI protections. This action comes after negotiations broke down with many major video game companies for eighteen months.
Prominent publishers like Activision Productions, Disney Character Voices, Formosa Interactive, Electronic Arts Productions, and Insomniac Games are among those collaborating. SAG-AFTRA has been pushing for contracts that guarantee its members’ “critical” AI protections. The group asserts that these businesses have not, however, consented to legally binding terms that would protect performers against the improper application of AI technology.
A spokesperson for the video game companies expressed disappointment over the strike decision. The companies assert that they have already reached agreement on 24 of the 25 proposals made by the union. These agreements include wage increases and enhanced safety measures, as reported by NBC News.
Fran Drescher, President of SAG-AFTRA, emphasized the union’s stance: “We’re not going to consent to a contract that allows companies to abuse A.I. to the detriment of our members. Enough is enough.” Drescher stressed that the union is ready to resume negotiations when companies are willing to offer an acceptable agreement.
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, underscored the importance of these performers. “They deserve and demand the same fundamental protections as performers in film, television, streaming, and music: fair compensation and the right of informed consent for the A.I. use of their faces, voices, and bodies,” he stated.
This strike mirrors a similar action taken by SAG-AFTRA members in film and television in June 2023, which also focused on the use of AI in entertainment. The strike highlights ongoing concerns about the ethical use of AI in the industry and the need for robust protections for performers’ rights.
As the video game industry continues to generate billions in annual revenue, the role of these performers is crucial. Their work is integral to the industry’s success, and ensuring their rights are upheld remains a key issue for SAG-AFTRA.
