On the basis of jurisdictional grounds, the Central District Court of California ruled in favor of Dutch game company Gamedia in a recent legal dispute. With this ruling, a protracted disagreement with well-known blockchain gaming startup Gala Games is somewhat resolved.
It has been more than a year since the two corporations started to argue. A tense token fork and burn in May 2023 marked the start of it all. With Wright Thurston, a co-founder of Gala, still facing legal action from Eric Schiermeyer, this burn was meant to void tokens that Thurston had purportedly stolen. The successful game “Spider Tanks,” on which Gala and Gamedia had been collaborating, caused the latter company to voice worries about Gala’s lack of assistance. Concerns like broken promises about finance, publicity, and publication support were among those they mentioned.
Gamedia alleged that Gala’s internal conflicts had caused significant disruptions. Reports indicated that Gala had taken drastic measures against its co-founders, shareholders, and employees, including dismissals and legal actions. This turmoil, coupled with Gala’s expanding interests in film and music, led Gamedia to feel sidelined in terms of game support and financial transactions.
In light of these issues and after several failed attempts to resolve them with Gala, Gamedia opted to withdraw from further investments in “Spider Tanks.” This decision prompted Gala to take legal action against Gamedia.
With the court ruling in Gamedia’s favor, the future of “Spider Tanks” remains unclear. The game, initially a significant part of Gala’s blockchain gaming ecosystem, may now seek a new platform. There is speculation that Gamedia could relaunch the game on a different blockchain, although no concrete plans have been announced yet.
As the legal and business landscapes continue to evolve, the resolution of this dispute may reshape the trajectory of both Gamedia and Gala Games.
