Brendan Greene Plans NFT-Free Metaverse in New Game Project

The creator of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG), Brendan Greene, is creating Artemis, a brand-new metaverse focused on gaming. With its emphasis on user-driven innovation and multiplayer interactions, this ambitious project promises to completely transform how users interact with digital worlds.

No NFTs, But Blockchain Could Play a Role

Greene has made it clear that non-fungible tokens (NFTs) will not be part of Artemis. Speaking to IGN on January 4, he stated, “Not even thinking about [NFTs].” Despite the crypto industry’s push for NFTs to secure in-game assets, Greene is more concerned with developing a robust engine that allows for immersive gameplay. “Our concern is about getting the engine to a state that we can make things in it,” he said, emphasizing the importance of building a fun, playable game first.

While NFTs are off the table for now, Greene is open to integrating blockchain technology in the future. He noted, “Blockchains are an interesting financial instrument, as a layer within a digital world.” Greene suggested that, in time, technologies like blockchain or hashgraph might find their place in the metaverse. Ultimately, Greene envisions a system that uses digital ledgers for seamless transactions, although the specifics remain uncertain for now.

Greene is determined to build a metaverse that transcends the current trend of “intellectual property bubbles.” He criticized many existing metaverse projects for falling short of their promises, calling them sub-par and unable to deliver the hype. He stated, “I want to build a metaverse because I don’t think anyone else is.” According to Greene, most other developers are merely creating isolated ecosystems that may one day connect but fall short of a true metaverse experience.

Greene’s goal is clear: to construct a “3D internet” where players can build, modify, and explore multiple interconnected worlds. “The Metaverse is a 3D internet. You should be able to create your own worlds and just have them all operating on the same protocol, like HTTP,” he explained. Artemis, the culmination of three projects, aims to bring this vision to life.

The ultimate project will serve as the pinnacle of the Artemis metaverse, which will be constructed upon three distinct games. NASA’s Earth data served as the inspiration for the first, Prologue, a realistic survival game. Prologue, which is set to premiere in 2025, is currently accessible for online testing. In order to facilitate Artemis’ smooth integration, the second game—which has not yet been given a name—will prioritize expansive multiplayer environments with millions of characters.

In the end, Artemis will place a strong emphasis on user-generated content, enabling users to design their own game experiences. Greene compared its design to well-known video games where innovation is essential, such as Minecraft and Star Trek’s Holodeck. More than just a game, Artemis seeks to provide a completely new manner for players to engage and enjoy the game.
