In a development that may have been described as a sign from God, Azure Ray prevailed at ESL One Kuala Lumpur 2023, sponsored by Intel®. At the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), an exciting weekend of professional Dota 2 play came to a conclusion with the team’s incredible 3:2 reverse sweep triumph. It was the second tournament of the ESL Pro Tour (EPT) Season 2 and the first arena-scale Dota 2 LAN competition since The International 2023, drawing over 18,000 passionate spectators over the course of the three-day playoffs.
In a hotly contested grand finals, Azure Ray outwitted 11 elite teams, including the tough Gaimin Gladiators, demonstrating their strategic ability. Azure Ray pulled off an incredible comeback in the grand finals, winning 3:2 and taking home the coveted title after trailing 0–2. The team’s cohesiveness, cooperation, and expertise helped them win, and they took home a US$300,000 (RM1,410,000) top prize out of a US$1,000,000 (RM4,700,000) total prize fund.
The victory of Azure Ray also resulted in a significant increase of 4,800 EPT points out of a total of 19,980. These vital points affect the teams’ positions on the Leaderboard, which affects invitations to elite tournaments like DreamLeague Season 22.
Even though they lost, Gaimin Gladiators gave it their all and finished in second place, taking home US$175,000 (RM822,500) and 3,600 EPT points. Third-place winners Team Liquid took home US$120,000 (RM564,000) and 3,000 EPT points.
