Sam Bankman-Fried, the former FTX CEO now serving a 25-year prison sentence, has been transferred to a federal correctional facility in Los Angeles. According to the Bureau of Prisons, the 33-year-old is currently housed at FCI Terminal Island, a low-security facility with more than 900 male inmates.
Good to know
His journey through the federal prison system has included several stops. After being held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, Bankman-Fried was taken to the Federal Transfer Center in Oklahoma City, which typically processes inmates in transit. From there, he was briefly housed at a medium-security prison in Victorville, California, before finally being moved to Terminal Island.
Bankman-Fried was sentenced earlier this year for his role in the collapse of FTX, once one of the largest crypto exchanges in the world. He was found guilty of misusing billions in customer funds, an event that sent shockwaves through the crypto industry and played a key role in the broader market downturn in 2022.
His official release date is currently listed as December 2044. But behind the scenes, his family isn’t sitting still.
According to reports, his parents—Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried, both Stanford Law School professors—have already taken steps to try to reduce his prison time. Sources say the couple met with individuals linked to Donald Trump, exploring a possible clemency strategy now that Trump is once again a major political force.
