In 2024, Russian electrical supplier Rosseti suffered damages of $14 million (1.3 billion rubles) as a result of illegal cryptocurrency mining. Unauthorized operations have overloaded power systems and hampered the delivery of electricity in the Volga Region, Novosibirsk, and the North Caucasus, which are the most impacted regions.
130 incidents of illegal mining were discovered by authorities, with farms concealed in temporary buildings on rented property, underground parking lots, and warehouses. Residential areas experience voltage reductions and outages as a result of these unauthorized setups that steal electricity without being paid.
In Novosibirsk, authorities found 3,200 mining rigs syphoning electricity on an industrial scale, making it one of the biggest busts. Damages from this operation alone totaled $2.1 million (197 million rubles).
To combat the issue, Rosseti has intensified efforts alongside law enforcement, leading to over 40 criminal cases and multiple arrests. Illegal crypto mining remains a persistent challenge, as miners exploit cheap electricity and regulatory loopholes to maximize profits.
With increasing pressure from authorities, Russia may soon tighten regulations on cryptocurrency mining. As global Bitcoin adoption accelerates, stricter oversight could reshape the country’s mining landscape in the coming years.
