Parafi Capital, a digital asset manager based in New York, has raised $120 million to purchase general partner (GP) stakes in cryptocurrency funds. These funds have a deliberate concentration on particular market niches, approaches, and regions. With the help of this additional funding, Parafi Capital hopes to create a broad portfolio of 30 to 50 general partner holdings in various cryptocurrency businesses.
Parafi Capital’s latest funding initiative underscores its commitment to acquiring or investing in general partner stakes in crypto funds. Notable investors such as Theta Capital Management and Accolade Partners participated in this significant funding round, showing strong confidence in Parafi’s approach.
The firm’s founder, Ben Forman, highlighted their strategy, explaining, “GP stakes are a growing asset class in traditional finance but haven’t existed at scale in crypto. We think they will. We’ve watched the crypto-fund landscape evolve closely over the years. We believe there will be many more crypto funds as institutional capital enters this space. It’s important to have specialization and focus, whether it’s across geography, theme, or type of investment.”
General partner stakes have gained traction in the venture capital world due to their alignment with limited partners’ interests. These stakes often include performance-based incentives, such as carried interest, making them attractive to both venture capital firms and asset managers. Parafi Capital has recognized this trend and is positioning itself to capitalize on it within the crypto space.
Before this capital raise, Parafi Capital, backed by KKR & Co. co-founder Henry Kravis, had already invested in nine asset managers using its internal resources. With the new funding, Parafi Capital is poised to expand its portfolio significantly, increasing the number of asset managers it supports.
