World Cup Starting in 10 Days – Odds on Winner?

The world cup in football starts in only 10 days and it is easy to feel the football fever already, as the national team anthems and the world cup anthem have been released and are in constant circulation on music channels as well as on the radio’s. With the world cup being played in Brazil, it provides a very samba summer vibe around the world cup and it seems that people are adapting to this prior to the cup starting.

While the countries represented at the World Cup will of course have their fans cheering for them, it is no secret that many of us likes to bet and also like to win some serious money. So we took a look at Bet365’s Outright Winner Odds, to see if there were any value bets amongst it or if it is just one big lottery.

To us the biggest surprise is that Belgium is the 5th favourite to win the world cup, giving odds 19.00, when a team like Uruguay on paper is better has odds 34.00. For the same reason we see Uruguay as a good outsider bet to win the world cup title, as their team has probably never been stronger and they have a serious shot of winning the cup.

If we take a look at the usual world cup favourites, the home team Brazil is by far the biggest favourites, giving only odds 3.75 for them to win it. Argentina gives odds 5.50 while Germany gives odds 7.00 to win the cup, which is not exactly great odds on the three teams. We do believe that Brazil and Germany can win it this year, but Argentina doesn’t look as strong as intimidating as they usually do and therefore we see it as a bad bet.

Teams like France, Italy and Portugal are all also outside contenders, but they haven’t looked strong in the qualification or in their friendlies and we don’t believe that much will change. They will move on from their respective groups, but when they meet a stronger team they are out.
