Vietnamese Police Busts and Arrests $47 Illegal Gambling Ring

Share

Vietnamese police busted and arrested  the owner of a gay magazine called Attitude in Ho Chi Minh City, charging him with having run an illegal gambling ring worth one trillion Vietnamese Dong, equal to around €40 million. He was arrested along with nine others, all with connections to the Philippines-based betting site 12bet.com.

To Cong Hung, the owner of the gay magazine in Vietnam, had been running the operations in Vietnam for 12bet for a long period of time, before being caught. Gambling is not legal in Vietnam, which means that Hung can look forward to a big penalty for having conducted illegal gambling and the money he has made.

Hung received help from his family and friends to open up bank accounts and receive money on them from bettors around the country as well as cash outs from the bookie. By having multiple accounts, it was not so easy to trace for the police and the tax department, but eventually they figured it out.

Most of the bettors bet on sports on the site, but there were some who also played casino games. The funds were converted into points and virtual currency on the site, the agent way, which the players could use for whatever they wanted to.
