US Attorney Who Defended NJ Sports Betting Case Resigns

The state of New Jersey has long been fighting to get federal clearance to offer Las Vegas-style sports betting throughout its racetracks and Atlantic City casinos.

In essence, state lawmakers are aiming at contesting the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (known as PASPA) which criminalizes sports betting across 46 states.

At a hearing in Philadelphia at the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals on June 26, 2013, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman stated that irrespective of PASPA, New Jersey could repeal the ban on sports betting, adding that such a move would be “incredibly irresponsible”.

Clearly, if Fishman’s proposal is taken up, things might go exactly against the status quo sports leagues and the federal government are trying to preserve.

Democratic appointee Paul Fishman has been asked to resign by President Donald Trump as part of the new administration’s turnover policy.
