UK Gaming Commission Gives Warning Against Fantasy Sports Contests Ahead Of English Premier League

Share

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has given out a strong warning against illegal fantasy sports leagues with entry fees. UKGC stated in the notice that anyone running a fantasy contest business could be going against the law.

The notice from UKGC comes ahead of the English Premier League (EPL) season that begins in August.

The UKGC has given out guidelines on running a fantasy sports league, which mandates the requirement of a pool betting license for operating or even advertising a fantasy contest in the country.

The rule stands exception to where it is run privately within friends or residents of same premises or between work colleagues, which are not in the course of business. Promoting fantasy sports on any social media or privately or within groups could mean it is being operated in the process of a business and would require an operating license.

For the players in the UK market, the season-long fantasy based on the EPL and other soccer leagues are far more popular than DFS in the UK. FanDuel, DraftKings UK, etc. are a few names that operate and serve the UK market.
