The Union sports ministry is investigating what the possible benefits of legalizing sports wagering might include and how it will benefit the country. The legalization effort comes as a response to an ever-increasing pressure from interest groups asking for a solution to stop or regulate an industry that has been crossing ethical boundaries but also to raise funds to develop sports related activities. The ministry had requested study of gambling systems abroad, specifically in the UK and the US, but the projct was moved aside a few years ago. Now it has revived and it is paying special attention to the UK model. “We are still at a preliminary stage of examining the issue. It is one way of curbing illegal betting. Revenue too was a major motivating factor” top sources told the Times Of India.
