Government betting regulatory body, Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (LGRB), closed 30 illegal sports betting centres in areas of Kampala city and Wakiso district, making the total of 78. Last month about 48 centres were shut down in the city suburbs and Mukono district.

LGRB justified the closing the premises claiming that some of them were unlicensed operators while another allowed individuals under 25 years of age to enter their premises.

LGRB, with the help of police, seized machine and other items from the illegal betting centres and all the seized machines were taken to the nearby police station.

The law in Uganda is very clear about the age restriction, many under age were found in many centres. Many were operating in areas below the minimum required area of 30 square metres, while some were operating near the schools, churches and government offices, and hence were closed.

LGRB has a various list of responsibilities including licensing, regulating and taxing the betting industry. It is aimed to protect the citizens of ill effects of gaming and betting in Uganda.
