DSWV German Betting

The German Betting Association (DSWV) has objected to the latest version of the Gambling Treaty Amendment by filing an appeal to the government. This is part of the continuous effort to improve sports betting regulations in Germany.

The changes to the State Treaty foresee the implementation of a quality approval system for sports betting operators. This measure builds upon the short-lived 2012 licensing procedure introduced for a maximum of 20 sports books, which failed due to its highly restrictive nature.

According to DSWV President Mathias Dahms, “The minimally invasive revision of the treaty is a small step in the right direction but it falls short. The restrictive regulations for sports betting operators derive from an outdated monopoly system and have not been capable of creating an attractive and legal range of games.”

In other words, unless regulations become less prohibitive, there is a risk of encouraging illegal sports betting and shady operators.

The DSWV remains open for constructive dialogue to improve the sports betting environment in the country.
