Portugese football super star Cristiano Ronaldo is the heavy favorite in this year’s Ballon d’Or competition. The Ballon d’Or is the most prestigious award for individual football players and it’s to be awarded in January 2015.
The Ballon d’Or, or Golden Ball, was first awarded in 2010 and Lionel Messi won the award the first three years, with Ronaldo finishing second twice. Last year Ronaldo won the prize and Messi was the runner-up. The Ballon d’Or was brought to life after a merger with the Fifa World Player of the Year, an award that had been running since 1991 when Lothar Matthaus managed to win.
Over the years Brazil dominated this award as Ronald (3), Ronaldinho (2) and both Kaka and Romario managed to win the title. The most successful player since the start was Zinedine Zidane who won three times, finished second once and third twice.
This year Ronaldo’s 1.17:1 followed by Messi at 9:1 and Thomas Muller (17:1), Manuel Neuer (25:1) and Philip Lahm (34:1). At the same price as the latter you can also get Neymar, and James Rodriguez is tempting at 41:1, as the Colombian striker gained lots of popularity after a successful World Cup campaign and a transfer to Real Madrid.
If you like a long shot than Mario Gotze at 101:1 might be interesting, but all eyes are on Ronaldo who’s looking to take down his second Ballon d’Or in a row.
