Sunday Funday Ulrich denied second Sunday Million Title

Sunday Funday - Ulrich denied second Sunday Million Title

Ulrich denied second Sunday Million Title, Mandavia leaves the HU tables to win the Sunday Rebuy and Rasmussen stands alone at the end of the Sunday Brawl.

If my regularly touted theory that high value tournaments drive up Sunday Major participation, then this week was set up to be a doozy.  PokerStars kicked off its MicroMillions series over the week, brining low buy in, big guarantee tournaments to the virtual felt.  Sadly, my theory took a kick in the teeth this week.  While some tournaments finished up, there was no unifying trend.  The PokerStars Sunday Million was down, as was the 500, but the $109 Rebuy was way up and the Warm Up and 500 both gained players.  The theory still has a chance though, as the Micro Millions main event comes up this weekend and we can see what it does compared to this week’s traffic.

Enough about theories.  Let’s talk results.  The pros came out to stand in the limelight this week with NLHU Specialist Ankush “pistons87” Mandavia taking down the Sunday Rebuy, Thayer “THAY3R” Rasmussen overcoming a tough final table to take the FTP Sunday Brawl and taking a cash win was Tim “blumenkind53” Ulrich with a deal at the Sunday Million final table, but “liv_hbk” denied him his second “big show” title.  There was still plenty of other big MTT action this week, so here are the results, top to bottom.

Sunday Million ($1,000,000 GTD) – PokerStars

Buy in:  $200+15     Entrants:  7,349  Prize Pool: $1,469,800

Tim “blumenkind53” Ulrich was extremely close to a feat few accomplish, and one he had not gotten close to since 2010.  But, in the end, after a three way deal guaranteed a minimum payout for each (with the lion’s share for “blumenkind53”), Ulrich found “Running Goot” running a bit better than he and “liv_hbk” taking home the title.  It’s OK, he has $15,000 in extra cash to wipe away his tears with.  Getting close but missing the biggest final table of the week were Steve "Stov0L_" Leonard (11th - $8,182) and Chris "Genius28" Lee (20th - $3,466.)  The big show was down 623 runners over last week, taking almost $125k out of the prize pool.  Strangely, the usual bellwether of the day did not hold true though, as other Sunday Majors went on to post gains…including the Million’s own “Warm Up."

Sunday Warm-Up ($500,000 GTD) – PokerStars

Buy in:  $200+15  Entrants: 3,502  Prize Pool:  $700,400

While the “Million” was down over 623 runners, the Warm-Up saw an increase of 224 players over last week.  I’m not sure what could cause such a rift in these two tournaments (they’re usually handcuffed) but the numbers don’t lie.   Neither do the cards.  And when the last ones were dealt out, “tnapoleao” took it all down and scored the coveted 6-figure online win along with the title.   No known players made the final table, but getting close were Jakob "mendieta19" Carlsson (14th - $3,151) and Robert "Little Kraut" Deppe (21st - $1,786.)

Sunday 500 ($300,000 GTD) – PokerStars

Buy in: $500+30 Entrants:  831   Prize Pool: $415,500

‘Stars big buy in was down almost 3% this week, but that only meant 24 fewer players bought in, taking $12,000 out of the prize pool.  The tourney still cleared its guarantee by over $100k, so there’s no need to panic.  Typically, the 500’s final table is full of known names, but this week known players like Stefan "Mattssons" Mattsson (10th - $4,236), Brian “brianm15″ England (12th - $4,236) and Alexander "AlexKP" Petersen (22nd - $1,856) we’re locked out of the last 9 seats and “TUTI88” took home the big prize of $72,630.

$250,000 Guarantee – FullTilt Poker

Buy in: $200+15 Entrants: 1,519   Prize Pool:  $303,800

Speaking of down a near-meaningless number (in the short term), the big guarantee on FTP had a shortfall of 24 players over last week that shorted the prize pool $7,800.  However, it still crushed the guarantee by $50,000+ so when “threat89” got “pyxlius” to quit the fight in a heads up deal, they took home $53,045 and $45,522 respectively.  Again, the anonymous took down the final table and our known players fell short, including Billy “DurangoDan35” Kopp (10th - $2,960), Bryan "enterthewu19" Piccioli (14th - $2,190) and Ben Jenkins (19th - $1,184.)

$109 Sunday Rebuy ($225,000 GTD) – PokerStars

Buy in: $100+9 (RB) Entries:  1060 Prize Pool:  $333,300

The Rebuy saw the biggest uptick of the week as 90 more players showed up to log in, but the rebuys flew like crazy, creating a $36,800 increase in the total prize pool.  In the end it was 1060 entries and 2,273 rebuys, creating a bigger average buy in per player than a $215 big buy in major.  At the end of the rebuy madness, Ankush “pistons87” Mandavia took down the title, after making a deal with “HokuzzPokuzz” (2nd) and Jason “jdtpoker” Wheeler (3rd.)  Ankush is known for his prowess at the digital felt in the HU cash arena, but this week showed he had what it took to go after the Sunday Majors and take one down.  Getting close but missing the final two tables were Cam "murballz66" Murray (22nd - $1,499) and Dylan "ImaLucSac" Linde (29th - $1,166.)

Sunday 2nd Chance – Poker Stars

Buy in:  $200+15  Entrants: 1,311  Prize Pool:  $262,200

The 2nd Chance also saw a little dip this week with 58 fewer entrants knocking an $11,600 hole in last week’s prize pool.  Again, not a big drop, and the guarantee was crushed by over $85k.  In the end, “Fellini33” would walk off this this particular Oscar, edging out entries by “noirduck” (A Noir Waterfoul Mystery), “thebeach76” (A Film about Bikini Sideburns) and “Dick_Fosbury” (A sports bio-pick about the world’s most famous flopper.)  Also putting in entries but not getting nominated for the final table were Tommy "TMoney0209" Miller (12th - $2,333), Saul "iCeVeNoM" Khalili (24th - $1,101) and Jordan "iMsoLucky0" Morgan (25th - $1,101.)

Sunday Supersonic ($125,000 GTD) – PokerStars

Buy in: $210.80+4.20   Entrants: 1,404 Prize Pool: $295,963

Fast and furious in the big turbo this week, “zhivago2” got the best of his 4-way deal that saw Paul “pvas2” Vas Nunes take 4th, “kaju85” take 3rd and “stathos” finish runner up.  Missing the final table but also going deep were Larry "BBOY3110" Sharpe (11th - $2,811) and Toby "810ofclubs" Lewis (20th - $1,035.)

Sunday Brawl ($200,000 GTD) – FullTilt Poker

Buy in:  $240+15 Entries:  1,258 Prize Pool:  $251,600

If you thought the decreases were a budgetary issue this week (since the Micros were running,) then the Sunday Brawl disproves that theory.  99 more punters than last week lined up and plunked down $255 bucks to have at it, bumping the prize pool $23,760 over last week.  In the end, the “old guard” of online poker took it down as “THAY3R” stacked a final table that included Yann “yadio1111” Dion in third and Paul “pvas2” Vas Nunes (who was double tapping Sunday Major final tables) in 4th.  Easily the most talent laden final table of this Sunday’s majors, it’s just another feather in the cap of one of poker’s best MTT players, both live and online.

$200,000 GTD Sunday – PartyPoker

Buy in: $200+15 Entries:  1,139 Prize Pool:  $227,800

Party Poker’s Big Sunday Guarantee also saw a minor drop off this week.  13 fewer players showed up, kicking $2600 out of the prize pool versus last week.  But the prize pool still beat the guarantee by more than $25k and first prize still eclipsed $50k…or it would have without a deal between “padredetres” and Scrat4es” who chopped up the top two spots after taking out a talented final table that included Alex Bryunetkin in 4th
