Tuesday night, two of the most iconic sports stars in the world played a grudge-match against each other, as Tennis Superstar Rafael Nadal and Football Legend Ronaldo played a poker match in order to win $50,000 to their charity organization.
The two players had a total of 20 minutes of play to show their poker skills and after an intense session, Nadal had racked up the most chips and took home $50,000 for the Rafa Nadal Foundation. It was a close match according to Nadal, who enjoyed playing against Ronaldo.
“It was close for most of the match and I’m delighted to have won. I called all-in at the final hand, which proved to be a good move! Ronaldo is a football great and it’s amazing for me to have the opportunity to face him at the poker table. I’m happy for a rematch if Ronaldo is up to the challenge.” Nadal said.
Ronaldo originally challenged Nadal back in September, due to the two having a clash in December last year at the Charity Tournament at the European Poker Tour in Prague. Nadal went on to win that tournament, not only beating Ronaldo, but also Daniel Negreanu.
“Rafa played well, I made a mistake going all-in at the end with a bluff, but ultimately Rafa had the best hand. Sometimes you have to be bold in poker, and even though it didn’t work out this time, I had fun.” Ronaldo said after the match.
“In poker, you need self-control, the ability to analyse your opponent and read the game to know when to go for it, a strategy that is not too dissimilar to tennis.” Nadal added.
