Michigan Gets Closer to Online Poker Bill

Share

The state of Michigan has made progress with online gambling legislation as a bill to legalize iGaming was passed Wednesday in the Senate’s Regulatory Reform Committee by a 7-1 vote.

Although the same happened with last year’s proposal, it could not make it further in the legislature.

The only states in the country where online gambling is legal are Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware. However, their combined market is lacking in liquidity, estimated at slightly more than $200 million. In order to enhance profits in that segment, more states need to jump on the bandwagon. Fortunately, California, New Hampshire, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New York are already looking in this direction.

Michigan’s bill would allow both commercial and tribal casinos to have gambling sites. However, the Gun Lake and Pokagon Potawatomi tribes oppose the proposal.

It is now four years since Michigan started contemplating legalizing online casino games. The brick-and-mortar casino market in the state is about $3 billion.
