Italian block on online poker unlawful

For many years now, Italy has blacklisted a large number of online poker rooms and poker companies which it considered illegal. But according to a preliminary ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union, Italy can not legally block online poker websites and software which originate from within the European Union. The blacklisting practice seems to be widespread amongst European countries, with other member states following suite like Belgium, Greece and France.

The ruling comes as a minor victory to iGaming companies all over Europe, since they have been trying for years to spread awareness that this blocking practice is opposite to the EU trade principles. According to the Court of Justice of the European Union, national laws which restrict local markets from enjoying the services or goods from companies and operators based and licensed in other EU member states, is contrary to EU law.
