DC not ready for legal sports betting debut at football season opener

The speculation that whether debut of legal sports betting at brick-and-mortal locations in D.C will intersect with the opening season of football on 5 th September 2019 has come to a finality and the answer is NO.

The debut of legal sports betting in D.C alongside the football opening season match was anticipated, but D.C’s Office of Lottery and Gaming has confirmed that the process may be delayed by a few weeks.

The D.C’s office of lottery and Gaming explained , the plan to start accepting application for sports gaming licenses in September, but the approval may take time approx 30-45 days. Moreover, the process of approving standard licenses could take as long as three to six months. Also, the Office of Lottery and Gaming claims that it is yet to adopt the final rules that will govern legal sports gambling in the city.

The Office of Lottery and Gaming wrote down a statement in a mail to WTOP, “committed to establishing a solid regulatory framework that fosters public confidence and trust in the integrity of sports wagering operations in the D.C.”

In order to build trust among the associates and the people, the office said it is working to incorporate sports wagering industry standards to make sure D.C. has a workable model for those seeking a gambling license.

In between, a group of bars that have teamed up under the name Bet DC is hoping to get Class B gaming licenses and is working towards the goal. The lawyer who leadings Bet DC, Jeff Ifrah, said that the change in timeline will not affect their plans and they are already going to conduct a meeting later this month regarding this.
