By Daniel Allermand

Daniel Cates has been crowned as the winner of the WPT Alpha 8 in Johannesburg, with the modest buy-in of $100,000. Cates walked away with the first prize and $500,000 in cash for his efforts, which is well done seeing as he is a cash game player mainly. WPT Alpha 8 Johannesburg was a special tournament as only 10 players participated, which were among the best players in the world.

Names as Antonio Esfandiari, Philipp Gruissem, Erik Seidel, Jeff Gross and Jason Mercier were all part of the 10 man roster and delivered great entertainment and poker play for the rail. Mercier finished in third place, while Kineh Pather finished second after a short heads up match with Cates.

This is the first major title that Cates have won in tournament poker and he now has live tournament winnings of over $1,000,000 in total. Besides the cash he also received a Alpha 8 trophy that he can place on his fireplace at home. Congratulations to Cates and we hope to see even more to him in the following months.
