Australian Gambling Framework Approved by Government

Share

In an effort to crack down on online gambling, the Australian government has adopted a new set of regulations, one of which is prohibiting online gambling operators from offering different sign-up incentives to attract customers. Lines of credit will also become illegal under the new regime.

In addition, the measures foresee the creation of an online gambling self-exclusion register which people with problem gambling will be able to get listed under for a period of at least three months.

As of July 1, Australian legislators on the state and federal levels will collaborate to research and control problem gambling issues impacting the country. This is believed to be the first step towards the regulation of Australia’s iGaming market.

The Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill 2016 is another crucial legislative measure on its way to becoming a law. It makes it illegal for offshore gambling operators to offer online casino and poker products to local players.

A ranking recently published by The Economist reveals that Australians are the world’s biggest gamblers, with reported losses per adult resident of $990 for 2016.
