Microsoft is planning to use your brain to mine for cryptocurrency

Microsoft recently has revealed that it is planning to work on a proof-of-work algorithm that will use the brain waves to mine for cryptocurrency. The company has recently issued a patent application which has suggested that it will use brain waves and other biometric data to mine for cryptocurrency.

It is mentioned in the patent with the title, “Cryptocurrency system using data on body activity”, that Microsoft proposes using a sensor on the user’s body that will transmit data from “body activity”, such as brain activities, blood flow and movement, which would then be transmitted to as server.

Users will be motivated to complete all task, and that “a brain wave or body heat emitted from the user when the user performs the task provided by information or service provider, such as viewing an advertisement or using certain internet services, can be used in the mining process.”

This will replace the “massive computation work” which usually cryptocurrency mining requires, with all the data collected by the body activity considered as proof of work.

Mining Subconsciously

The patent has also mentioned sensor would be able to detect and find out different brain waves, including gamma and beta waves that involve learning, memory and logical thinking, and alpha waves which are related to the subconscious.

Microsoft also suggested the fact that work performed by users will be done “unconsciously”, which makes reference to that alpha brainwaves will be the most important here, and could mean the work is done while the users concentrate on other things.

Now, because all of these stuff sounds very sci-fi, we don’t know for sure if larger number of people will be willing to hand over their brain power to Microsoft, even though it is giving wholesome reward for this process.
