If you have ever been looking for a hotel to book online, you have probably stumbled across Expedia.com. The travel giant not only sells flight tickets, but also sell accommodation at hotels worldwide, making it easy for people across the world to create their own unique holiday through their website.
Now Expedia have announced that they will begin to accept Bitcoin payments for hotel bookings made through their site, making them the first major travel agency to accept cryptocurrency as a payment method.
“Bitcoin is a great example of how Expedia is investing early in an array of payment options to give our customers and partners more choice in the ways they interact with us,” Expedia said in a press release. “Customers simply indicate bitcoin as their method of payment and then follow a few steps to safely and securely complete each transaction,”
Besides payments for hotels, Expedia is also looking into accepting the cryptocurrency as a payment method for other travel sectors. This could include cruises, plane tickets and even round trips across the world, as Expedia offers all of these products to their customers and have a market capitalization of $9,75 billion.
Expedia has partnered up with Coinbase to be able to accept Bitcoin payments. Coinbase is one of the leading Bitcoin exchange sites and also made some great deals with companies accepting Bitcoin payments. Every payment made with Bitcoins will automatically be exchanged into the local currency, ensuring that Expedia cannot lose any funds on accepting the payment.
