Australian Buses to Start Accepting Bitcoin

Australian mobile developers have come up with an application called MyBus 2.0 which would allow customers to pay for their bus fares using Bitcoin, which would make them the first public transport system company in the world to do so. MyBus 2.0 is an application that allows users to check timetables and routes for Canberra’s bus network ‘Action’. Action is the city’s main public transport system and developers announced to their more than 50,000 users they might soon be able to use Bitcoin as payment method for fares.

Action currently uses a pre-paid fare smartcard called MyWay, much like Oyster in London. MyWay automatically removes the fare amount from the pre-paid account balance every time a user touches the smartcard against a reader when enterin and exiting the bus. The account balance could in theory be re-loaded using an online transaction method which would also accept Bitcoin as payment solution.
