Panhandle Casino Given the Go-Ahead by Oklahoma Governor

The Shawnee Tribe has moved a step closer to building a $25 million casino in the vicinity of Guymon in the Oklahoma Panhandle. The development occurred following Gov. Mary Fallin’s support of a U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs decision.

In essence, the federal agency designated a plot of land four miles southwest of Guymon for exploitation by the Oklahoma-based native American tribe. The authorization was necessary given the fact that the tribe does not possess any jurisdictional land of its own.

The plan for building the 42,000-square-foot Golden Mesa Casino has both supporters and opponents. For instance, State Senator Bryce Marlatt of Woodward objected to the proposal on the grounds that the Shawnee tribe had no historical relation to the area.

As far as the gaming parlor’s proponents are concerned, they claim it will create 175 jobs and attract visitors from New Mexico, Texas Panhandle, Kansas and Colorado.
