Packer’s Crown Group Not Related to New Gold Coast Casino Project

James Packer’s Crown Resorts did not back up claims by developer of the $3 billion casino resort on the Gold Coast’s Southport Spit that the casino operator is a “consortium partner” in the project.

ASF Consortium is negotiating with the government of Queensland to develop the complex. The joint venture includes China State Construction Engineering and (a) Tier 1 casino operator.

The Australian has reported that ASF Consortium is partnering with Crown; however, the operator denied having an agreement with the development firm. According to a Crown spokesperson, there have been “preliminary discussions” with ASF but they yielded no particular outcome.

Essentially, ASF Consortium wants to erect five buildings of about 45 floors on the site while the current local plan permits developments of up to three storeys.

MP Steve Dickson, leader of One Nation in Queensland, spoke in favor of abandoning the project. In his view, “ASF’s proposal for a high-rise casino development on public land zoned three storeys is supported by the Palaszczuk government due to ASF’s claims to provide a large number of jobs and increase tourism. However, it is strongly opposed by residents, visitors to The Spit, many businesspeople and even well-known property developers such as Norm Rix.’’
