Nooksack’s Northwood Casino Ordered To Be Shut Down By A Federal Agency

The Nooksack tribe was ordered on ordered the tribe on Thursday to close its Northwood Casino in Lynden immediately by a federal agency, The National Indian Gaming Commission.

According to the federal law governing Indian Gaming, Tribal casinos must be conducted by federally recognised leadership.

The tribe has no such leadership and has been long involved in the dis-enrollment fight for long. Last Year the top federal officer for Indian affairs wrote a series of letters to the tribe saying the feds would refuse to recognise any actions of the tribal council because four members with expired terms continued to serve.

The tribe was defunded by Federal and state agencies, causing it to lose millions of dollars resulting in the tribe suing, which wasn’t perceived well by the U.S state attorney.

The Indian Health Service said it was taking over providing health care to the tribe.

Gaming commission’s order lists a series of violations, failure of the tribe to “maintain sole proprietary interest in and responsibility for the conduct of its gaming operation,” which relates to the tribe’s leadership.

the tribe was not operating the casino in a way that “adequately protects the environment and the public health and safety.

The tribe can appeal the order. But for any ongoing violation, it could be fined more than $50,000 a day.
