Mohawks keep New York casino territoy

Share

An agreement signed on Tuesday between Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and St. Regis Mohawk tribal leader guarantees the Mohawk’s exclusiveness in keeping their casino territory in north New York after paying the state $30 million in tax deduction. In 1999, The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino was established and it has now a 150-room hotel and over 1,800 slot machines, however, during that time, a Mohawk group set up bingo games and slot machines in some other location without the state’s approval jeopardizing the tribe’s deduction of revenues back in 2010. Due to the breakaway gambling location, the state must negotiate a reduction in the St.Regis payment.
