East Windsor Backs Up Casino Development Agreement

Share

There was unanimous support on the part of the board of selectmen Saturday for a casino development agreement in town.

The contract for East Windsor features the operators of the Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun establishments and could be the first casino off a Native American reservation in the state.

Promises are that the project will spur economic growth in the area as well as preserve state revenue and jobs in the gambling industry.

The East Windsor casino forms part of the effort to shadow the competitive threat of MGM Resorts International’s$950-million gaming and entertainment complex which is currently under construction in Springfield.

According to the development agreement, East Windsor commits to pay $3 million at least 15 months before the casino opens, along with $3 million a year on top of $5.5 million in annual property taxes.

The East Windsor project has been challenged in court by MGM on the grounds of the need for wider potential casino operator representation.
