Opposition from Sporting Bodies on Australian TV Ad Gambling Ban

Share

A proposal to ban betting ads during sporting events, which could imminently be approved by the Aussie government, is being met with serious resistance from some sports bodies within the country.

The main concern is that grassroots sports will inevitably lose their funding by passing this ban and that it will negatively impact the value of the lucrative media rights deals; this of course, is the sports’ biggest asset in the country.

Many critics say that this ban will drive the bettors offshore to unlicensed sites and will not necessarily result in less gambling. The belief is that the ban has the potential to stop sport receiving their product fees which are the commission that these sporting bodies rely on via Australian licensed betting companies.

They argue that this type of restriction or prohibition will impact negatively on the community, grassroots development and participation programs.
