Dutch Gambling Authority Makes Violator Pay €170,000 Fine

Dutch regulator Kansspelautoriteit has imposed a €170,000 fine on virtual casino operator Trustfulgames for targeting players in the Netherlands with its online gambling services. The official anouncement, which came on Tuesday, is the first demonstration of the tighter rules adopted by the Dutch watchdog towards violators of local gambling rules.

The current state of affairs came about after Malta-based Trustfulgames launched a campaign to provide online slots, casino games and sports betting options in Dutch.

The heavy punishment reflects the new approach of the local gambling authority, which has previously taken a softer stance towards unauthorized operators. Yet in 2015, Recorp and Bluemay Enterprises were each made to pay €240,000 in penalties for recurring breaches.

Online gambling legislation in the Netherlands has been in the process of development for years. A long-awaited iGaming bill was passed by the Dutch Lower Senate in the summer of 2016, and is now pending approval at the state level. If passed, the law will demand from online gambling platforms to obtain a license from Kansspelautoriteit in order to operate in the Dutch market.
