Burnley Midfielder Joey Barton Admits Responsibility in FA Betting Charge

Share

The Football Association has charged Burnley midfielder Joey Barton with placing 1,260 sports bets in the period March 2006 – May 2016. The player has admitted responsibility for the offence and has asked for a personal hearing before his sanctions are enforced.

According to preliminary expectations, Burton might propose mitigation for the contravention.

Pursuant to a 2014 amendment, FA regulations prohibit top-eight-tier players in England from betting on football matches or competitions worldwide. Prior to that, footballers were banned from betting on sports events in which they were involved or which they could influence. The charges Barton faces are claimed to fall under both the new and old rules.

Joey Barton kickstarted his career in Manchester City in 2001, moved on to Newcastle in 2007 and joined Queens Park Rangers in 2011. Subsequently, he signed his first contract with Burnley in August 2015, which was interrupted by a brief tenure at Rangers terminated due to a conflict, and rejoined Burnley last December.

The betting company used by Barton informed FA of his actions, which prompted a detailed investigation of the case due to the large number of bets placed by the midfielder.
