PokerStars is by far the biggest online poker room in the world and the kind of company that sets the standards for online and offline poker worldwide. They offer a massive volume of ring games, tournaments and SnG's throughout the day, from micro-stakes to high-stakes. Pokerstars is licensed and registered on the Isle of Man in the British Isles and has been in operation since 2000. It is the biggest online independent poker room and network in the world.
Games & Tournaments
At Pokerstars you have the chance to play in big tournaments like the Sunday Millions, which is hosted every week on the Pokerstars room. There are also a miriad of monthly tournaments in which you can buy in for FPP's. Some of the website's pros participate in a number of tournaments and there are bounties on their heads if you can beat them.
On Pokerstars you have weekly, monthly and yearly leaderboards all with rewards attached to them. These leaderboards are active for SnG's and MTT's. Your position on the board is based on how high you finish in the tournament you are playing in. The higher you rank on the leaderboard the higher the prize awarded including cash. Besides the leaderboards, Pokerstars is offering chances to win tickets to live tournaments as well, like the WSOP, EPT, APPT and LAPT.
Bonuses and Promotions
Pokerstars offers a 100% match bonus up to $600 or equivalent currency. The bonus is released in increments of $10 by accumulating and releasing VPP's. For every 20 VPP's you earn $1, meaning you need to release 200 VPP's per increment. Players can claim up to three bonuses, all within 60 days of the first deposit and before 120 days which is when the bonuses expire.
At PokerStars you can also take part in the loyalty program which rewards you in one fo two ways: VPP's (VIP Player Points) or in FPP's (Frequent Player Points). VPP's will decide in what level of the VIP program you currently are and will be moving to.
The FPP's on the other hand are earned every time you rake in cash games or tournaments and can be used to exchange for cash and perks at the VIP store. The more VPP's you earn, the higher your VIP level which allows you to earn more FPP's which can be exchanged into more prizes.
Software and Graphics
PokerStars develops its poker client in-house and has been doing so for the over a decade which is probably the reason they have been able to develop the best poker software in the industry. The client feels great to the senses, it's stable and hardly ever crashes.
It's pleasing to the eyes and it's smooth and fast and allows for efficient game play. Almost everything is customizable and allows for unlimited tournament multi-tabling and simultaneous gameplay at 24 stations with free resizing for each one.
PokerStars definitely has the best graphics and animations, they are bright, clear and crisp. The audio is also very clean although it can be distracting at times. Last year (in 2012) a fast-paced version of the regular game was released and named Zoom Poker. This variant allows players to fold their cards and instantly be dealt a new hand at another table.
The support staff at PokerStars is very friendly and knowledgeable and they are extremely quick and polite when answering. The only downside to support is that they don't offer support via telephone or live-chat. Live-chat would have been a great addition and would have automatically stepped Pokerstars a few notches in our review.
