Slot Machines Prohibited at Jacksonville Poker Room by Florida Authorities

Share

Legal issues have hindered Jacksonville Poker Room from placing gaming machines at its premises, according to local media reports. Florida authorities have rejected the operator’s request despite a positive referendum outcome.

Residents of Duval County voted in favor of installing slot machines at the facility in a referendum in November. However, bestbet’s application for a license to add 2,000 machines to the Jacksonville Poker Room was not successful.

Florida regulators have stated that only a change in gambling legislation could override their decision. It turns out that the outcome of the countywide referendum can be taken into consideration only with authorization by the Constitution.

Bestbet can file for appeal within three weeks, or choose to request an administrative hearing. According to media reports, the company intends to take no further action as of now.

In the meantime, the Florida Legislature seems torn between two contrasting approaches towards gambling. While the Senate favors the addition of slot machines wherever county residents have backed them up, the House believes regulators should not not issue new slot licenses.
