While the US government goes back and forth on whether or not the cryptocurrency Bitcoin should be banned there was a one-day window in which congressman were able to exchange US dollars for Bitcoin in an ATM machine on Capitoll Hill.
The Time.com website reports that that in the hallways of the Rayburn House of Representatives a Bitcoin ATM was placed on April 8th 2014. The media turnout for this event was huge as Colorado Democratic Rep. Jared Polis placed a $10 bill into the machine that immediately printed out a receipt with a code for 0.02 BTC.
This first ever Bitcoin purchase on Capitol Hill was historic and years from now we might look back on this as the first step into a world where cryptocurrencies are widely accepted.
The ATM machine was owned by Las Vegas based startup Robocoin, a company that sells machines who can exchange dollars for Bitcoins within a few seconds. The digital currency, supported by the libertarians, is usually quite hard to obtain but this machine turns it into a fluid process available for even the most computer illiterate.
Unfortunately for Bitcoin enthusiasts this event only lasted for a few hours, but putting BTC at the forefront of congressmen and women in the United States can only benefit its ultimately global acceptance.
