Mashpee Tribe Withdraws Request To Buld Proposed Taunton Casino

The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe, for now, has withdrawn its request for building a casino complex in East Taunton from the U.S Department of Interior over the ongoing land dispute.

The plan of the tribe to build the casino resort in East Taunton has been on a halt ever since the U.S. District Court Judge sided with the Taunton local residents in 2016.

The construction of “First Light Resort and Casino” was to start this summer and the complex was planned to open to the public by next year sometime.

The U.S government did not recognise Mashpee Wampanoag as a tribe until 2007.

The tribe claimed the Taunton casino project would create thousands of jobs including construction and as many as 2600 full and part time casino and resort jobs.

The tribe gave out a statement which said that the tribe would investigate all options and instead will “vigorously prosecute the appeal and examine all avenues available under the law,”
